Girls on guys

The sad reality is that while a lot of guys think they're great drivers, a bloke is much more likely to crash than a woman.

We hit the street to see what girls really think about guys and driving.

And a word of warning to you guys: the gals are not impressed!

"I think some guys are good on the road but there are some out there who can be pretty reckless. I think it's different when there are other guys in the car as well, they kind of show off a bit. Generally I feel safer in a car with a guy when he's just driving on his own and he doesn't have his friends with him."

"I think there are a lot of maniacs out there on the road, especially young guys when they're driving. Just today I saw this P plater driving and he was on the phone while he was driving!

"I just think girls are safer when they drive, they don't rush, and if they're going to be late it's kind of like, ‘Well, I'm going to be late', whereas a guy would speed so he'd get there on time."

"Sometimes I feel pretty scared when I'm on the road, like when I'm driving and there's a guy driving next to me and he'll speed up and try to keep up with you. And that can be really off-putting. But it's worse when there's a group of them and they're all trying to stir each other on and they try to make you drive faster to keep up with them. That kind of stuff happens all the time on the road."

"I think it's kind of half and half. There are some guys who are mad behind the wheel but then some can be really safe, especially if they've got passengers. But I hate it when you're driving along and one of them will just cut out in front of you, like they don't even notice you on the road. That's happened to me a few times."

"I think sometimes guys can be less careful on the road than girls, but it depends on who they're with. When you're just one-on-one in a car with a guy it's usually OK, but when their mates are around they start showing off, trying to impress each other, doing burn outs and all that kind of stuff... I think when you get a group of guys together they just try to out-do each other and they can be really dangerous on the road."

"Guys on the road? I think they get increasingly more risqué every time they go out! They think they know how to control situations on the road better than girls and I think they think they know how to drive better than girls in general. They take a lot of stupid risks like speeding and racing each other, whereas girls wouldn't do that because I think we just don't drive like that."

"Some guys out there are just stupid on the road, it's true, but I think there are some careful guys as well. And I wouldn't get in the car with a guy unless I felt totally comfortable with him and if I knew he was a good driver. My boyfriend and I have been driving for the same amount of time and I totally trust him behind the wheel and he trusts me. Some of his friends have had accidents where they've been at fault but he's never had an accident."

"Guys on the road can be pretty crazy, always speeding in front of you and saying stupid stuff at the lights, especially if you're out on the weekend. When I drive with my brother it's fine and he doesn't do any of that stuff, but as soon as you get one of his friends in the car it's like he's a different person – he's still watching the road and everything but he's talking to his friends, they turn up their music and he takes dumb risks like running red lights or flying over speed humps. It's a guy thing, I don't get it!"

"When we were at school heaps of the guys used to do burn outs in the car park and just drive around during their spares – I think they were just bored. But most of my guy friends now are good drivers and they don't do that sort of stuff, mainly because they're the designated driver at a party or they'll be driving their little brother or sister around on the weekend, that sort of thing. When they've got passengers it's a different story altogether."
